About this Tektronix 577 Curve Tracer package
This instrument is a Tektronix Model 577 Curve Tracer that would be an excellent addition for any lab or workshop. It includes the Tektronix 177 Test Fixture, as well as five Tektronix adapters for Transistors, Fets, Power Transistors and Diodes. These adapters are sometimes called "unobtanium", given their rare status.
The Tektronix 577 is one of the most popular Curve Tracers in the industry and is very reliable.
This package also includes the printed Tektronix Service Manual.

Features of the Tektronix 577 Curve Tracer:
The 577/D2 Curve Tracer system, when used with the 177 Standard Test Fixture, offers a convenient method of presenting dynamic characteristic transistor curves and a wide range of other semiconductor devices. This device allows dc parameter characterization of transistors, thyristors, linear ICs, diodes, SCRs, MOSFETs, optoelectronic components, solar cells, solid state displays and other semiconductor devices. Expanded parameter measurements are available for linear op-amps, SCRs and three terminal regulators when using one of three application specific adapters with the 178 Test Fixture (not-included with this auction) Collector supply: (five modes, five ranges) 6.5V/10 A, 25 V/2.5 A, 100 V/0.6 A, 400 V/0.15 A, 1600 V/0.04 A. Current increments: 5nA/step to 0.2 A/step +/-2%. Voltage increments: 5 mV/step to 2 V/step +/-2%. Take a look at this Tektronix 577 brochure for more specifications. Besides viewing the family of curves for a transistor or fet, this Curve Tracer can also be used as a fancy replacement of an "Octopus", an electronic device tester, used in conjunction with an oscilloscope. Check out this article from the Seattle Robotics Society. Another use of this Tektronix 577 Curve Tracer is as a Power Supply for test purposes. The 577 can generate both AC and DC voltages, variable from less than 1V to 1600V with Current Protection. This is accomplished by using the Collector (+) and Emitter (-) terminals in NPN mode. |

Description of this merchandise.
This particular unit is clean, with a few scratches. It is electrically in excellent working condition. The trace is clearly visible. There are no burn marks in the lower left corner of the CRT, as sometimes happens with these units. All the switches, knobs and buttons are present, functional, undamaged and operate freely. The knob on the transistor selection switch (Left/Right) is not the original knob, but the replacement is working well.

This picture shows the curves for a PNP transistor. By default, the curves are shown upside down (negative current). The 577 has the ability to invert the image.

This picture shows the curve for a Zener diode. The diode starts conducting in the positive direction at 0.6V, but doesn't start conducting in the negative direction until -56V. The Tektronix 577 has an AC feature which allows the user to see the positive and negative behavior of a device simultaneously.

This picture shows the curve for a High Voltage Capacitor, tested at 1600V. Again, the AC feature (non-rectified sine wave) was used.
